Nokia N800 internet tablet

by tomhoadley @ 2007-02-28 - 07:38:09

The original Nokia tablet, the N770, was something of a departure for the Finnish phone maker: here was a device without cellular connectivity, running a Linux-based OS, and generally unlike anything Nokia had produced before. So here we have an updated version, the N800. But is it a phone or not, that is the question?

The N770 was widely considered an aberration: a skunkworks - officially non-existent - project that had reached fruition and might provide an interesting platform for development or demonstration. Some technical staff convinced their bosses to buy them an N770 on that basis, and some bought one for themselves, but sales were minimal and the whole thing generally had nothing to do with the mobile phone business

The N800 still feels like a skunkworks project: it lacks the finesse of a typical Nokia product in both usability and stability, and it's unclear quite who the product is being aimed at. But it does offer some real new usage models and a glimpse to a future where handset manufacturers are no longer beholden to network operators to get their products to consumers.

Larger than all but the most unwieldy mobile phones, the front of the N800 is filled with an exceptionally clear screen, offering 800 x 480 resolution. The screen is touch-sensitive, usable with a finger, but easier with the stylus that slides out from the back of the device. The screen lacks the surface film visible on most touch-screen devices - and thus the reflection that goes with it, making N800 clearer and brighter than similar devices.

The interface is driven from a Home screen comprised of applets that can display data as well as providing shortcuts to applications. Examples include an RSS display, an internet radio player, a contacts list and a clock. Clearly Nokia is hoping that third-party developers will create new applets, as well as other applications for the platform. Installation of additional applications is automated, and though there is currently only one available - a streaming media client, which works well - the process is simple and intuitive. Installed applications can be accessed through the menu system, using either on-screen controls or buttons.

Why Not Upgrade Your Cell/Mobile Phone For Free?

by tomhoadley @ 2007-02-26 - 06:37:10

Have you noticed that some of your friends at work keep the same handset for 2 to 3 years or even longer (even though their contract is for 12 months)? If so, they are not using their right as a consumer to update their mobile phone every 12 or 18 months at the end of their contact. If they want to stick to their old handset because they are familiar with it or they are afraid to learn and explore the new technology on the latest handset, they can still upgrade to get a new handset for free. They can continue to use their old handset and either keep the new handset for back up in case their old handset fails for some reason or is lost or damaged. If they prefer, they can sell it and make a little bit of cash for themselves or they can give it away to a friend or family member to use as a pay as you go phone. Alternatively, they could give it to charity so someone else could benefit from it.

There are 6 main mobile phones networks in UK, namely O2, 3, Orange, Vodafone,T-Mobile and Virgin (a virtual network, using T-Mobile as its carrier). Each network has its own unique policy when it comes to upgrading your mobile phone. If you are a customer of any of the above networks and you think you are not getting a good deal on upgrade from your existing network then porting your number from one of the above networks to another is an option (at the same time you can upgrade your handset) and you could end up with a better deal.

I personally believe you can benefit from porting rather than upgrading on same network - as recently I have ported my number from Vodafone to Orange and I received the Sony Ericsson 990i for Free. Porting your number can take as long as 7 days but meanwhile you do not loose your connection as all this process is done automatically by Network to Network through PAC (Port Authorisation Code) process. Before you port to your new network you should check the coverage of the new network.

You must not cancel your existing contract with your network, as disconnected numbers cannot be transferred. When you provide your PAC number to your new chosen network this will instigate the cancellation process with your current Network/Service Provider.

So in summary to upgrade your handset for free at the end of your 12 or 18 month contract:

1- Call your network (at the end of your contact, this could be 12 or 18 months, I personally always go for a 12 months contract - there is a new and latest handset every other month or even week), see if you can get a good deal if you going to renew your contract for a further 12 or 18 months (just get a quote, then start shopping around).

2- Then check with other retailers especially with online mobile shop (i.e. shop around for best possible deal) if you can get a better deal if you upgrade your network through them.

3- You should definitely consider porting you number to another network. Remember you can get a better deal on porting your number to another network since you will then be considered to be a new customer by the new network.

Mobile phone on your fingers

by tomhoadley @ 2007-02-23 - 04:59:52

Why would anyone want to use their hands for chatting, literally? If you're wondering what this question refers to, just take a look at this latest mobile phone design, one of the winners at this year’s iF Concept Product Awards, and it might amuse you as much as it did me.

This concept product, called the ‘Finger Touching’ mobile, is apparently a wearable mobile device for enhanced chatting. Which means, you slip the device on to your hand and it projects a 3x4 cellphone keypad on to your palm as seen in the picture above. The buttons are placed on the finger joints, so all I can imagine is rap-tapping my fingers whenever I want to type out a text message. The keypad concept seems pretty inconvenient and does not consider the significant learning curve involved for users to shift to tapping messages on their palms for lack of the conventional keypad. Though the device itself looks sleek, several important questions remain unanswered. And if you're wondering, like I am, why the concept device has the Samsung brand name on it, all we can do is wait and watch until (or if) the concept does find its way into an actual product. In the meantime, I definitely have more useful tasks for my palm.

Samsung unveils new lines

by tomhoadley @ 2007-02-14 - 11:22:33

Samsung Electronics will expand its product portfolio and reach further into the low-priced segment of the handset market to maintain its top-three position in China, a senior executive said.

The South Korean mobile phone maker hopes to drive its sales in China by reinforcing its premium handset lines while offering more diversified products, said CR Jeon, senior manager of its Overseas Marketing Strategy Group, Mobile Communication Division. We will focus on (the high-end) Ultra Edition series this year and also expand our product range in China," Jeon said at the 3GSM World Congress 2007 held in this Spanish city.

Visitors at the Samsung stand at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona. The company said it will introduce more low-priced models in China to meet growth in rural regions.

Samsung is also planning to introduce more customized and dedicated models in China, such as music or messaging phones, Jeon said.

The electronics giant unveiled 15 new mobile phone models, including Ultra Edition II, some of which will be released in China.

The company will also strengthen its efforts in PDAs (personal digital assistants), a market that Samsung has previously neglected, the executive said.

But Samsung, which has long been known for its sleek designs and premium prices, "will also introduce more low-priced cell phones in China", Jeon said, noting that the demand is showing strong growth.

Samsung is currently the third-largest mobile phone vendor in China, comprising about 10 percent of the market, trailing Finnish firm Nokia and US-based Motorola.

China, the world's largest mobile phone market, had 461 million subscribers by December, according to the Ministry of Information Industry.

The number is expected to exceed 500 million this year, according to CCID Consulting, a Beijing-based consultancy affiliated with the Ministry of Information Industry.

And 160 million more mobile phone subscribers are expected to be added from 2007 to 2010, most of them coming from small towns and rural areas.

The mobile phone market in big cities has become increasingly saturated, the consultancy said.

"We hope low-priced cell phones we are going to introduce will drive our business and help maintain our position as a top vendor in the country," Jeon said.

Globally, Samsung aims to sell 133 million cell phones this year, increasing from last year's 118 million, Jeon said.

But the senior executive declined to say how many handsets his company is aiming to sell in China, citing company policy.

Samsung Black Carbon

by tomhoadley @ 2007-02-08 - 04:41:49

Ultra Mobile - Samsung Black Carbon

The Samsung Black Carbon is part of Samsung’s Ultra Edition line, and for good reason. It’s ultra thin, ultra powerful and ultra cool. There’s a lot of good stuff packed into this beautifully sculpted, stylish slim slider, including global GSM quad-band flexibility. In other words, you can enjoy the Black Carbon almost anywhere in the world.

Features:

12.9 Millimeters Thin:-You can never be too thin. Same with your phone. At only 12.9 millimeters, the Black Carbon is one of the thinnest, slimmest sliders in the world.

3.0 Megapixel Camera:-There are camera mobile phones, and there are ultra camera phones. With a full 3.0 megapixels, auto focus, a macro option and PictBridge technology, the Black Carbon is definitely the latter.

GSM Quad-band:-If you travel around the world, the Black Carbon would make the perfect travel companion. It's global GSM quad-band capabilities mean you won't miss a call, text message or sports score virtually anywhere you go.

Music Player:-The Black Carbon is more than a just good-looking phone. It sounds good, too. It plays MP3 files and a variety of AAC files, and it pumps 'em through a digital power amp so you can enjoy every stereophonic note to its fullest.

MicroSD Slot:-If the 60 MB internal memory of the Black Carbon isn't enough, you can load files onto a microSD card. The possibilities - and storage capabilities - are endless.

Rollable Mobile Phone Present to Get Underway Next Week

by tomhoadley @ 2007-02-07 - 04:31:05

Rollable Mobile Phone Present to Get Underway Next Week

Telecom Italia, the leading network in Italy, have partnered with Polymer Vision to launch the world's first mobile device with a rollable display.

The handset, which will be presented to the industry at 3GSM next week, uses a rollable display technology allowing a screen much larger than the handset to be stored internally and unrolled when it needs to be used.

Readability is similar to printed paper thanks to 16 grey levels and high contrast and the device is smaller than a typical phone despite the display measuring 5 inches. Future developments include colour images and a display capable of showing moving pictures.

The display allows users to read full newspapers as well as downloadable books which can be bought via the TIM network. Storage is 4GB so plenty of content can be stored. TIM has integrated a number of services such as RSS and email to allow users to make full use of the large screen.

A touch sensitive interface operates the phone and LED indicators make it look great as well. One of the best features is the low power consumption of the display - it will last for 10 days between charges.

Create Your Own Mobile Blog

by tomhoadley @ 2007-02-03 - 12:09:51

First, what's a moblog? A moblog, or a mobile blog, is an online record of anything you feel like sharing with the world, whether they want it or not. The difference between moblogging and regular blogging is that you use your phone or Pocket PC to post text or pictures.

There are obvious advantages to this. If you get inspired in the middle of a meadow, at your favorite local watering hole, or on a road trip, you won't have to wait until you can get back to your desktop to send your thoughts and photos to the world.

Though moblogging isn't new, it has been gaining popularity and attention, though I don't think the uses of it have been fully explored. It seems a perfect way, for instance, for a real estate agent to show new properties to clients. I've been looking around for a house lately, and I'm frustrated by the lack of pictures on real estate sites. If an agent had a mobile blog, she could take pictures and immediately send them to her moblog.

Then she could call her client on their Smartphone and say something like, 'hey, I just listed a house that seems to be what you're looking for. I'm standing right in front of it. I posted pictures to my moblog. Take a look, and if you like it, you can see it right away.'

In less then five minutes the client could look at the pictures on the agent's moblog on their own mobile device, decide if they like it, call her back, pull up the address on their Pocket Streets map (shameless plug). No time wasted.
There are several types of mobile blogging. One is simply using your Smartphone to post to your regular blog. The blog doesn't have a mobile version. Most major blog sites offer some way to post to your blog with your phone.

Another type of mobile blogging is using your camera to snap a picture, and then posting it to your mobile blog with MMS or e-mail. You can then view your pictures on a mobile version of your site. Textamerica is one popular Web host that does this. They also put car ads on the free sites. It's probably worth it to pay to have your site ad-free, but it's up to you.

There is a text only, bare bones site designed for mobile device viewing. The only company I've seen offer this is Winksite. You can bring in your favorite mobile feeds, add a forum, add a survey, add announcements, and add a chat. The developers put in a lot of functionality, but kept the user interface simple. If you have a forum on a mobile phone, you probably don't worry about color and style. However, it may discourage some from posting, as they're used to mobile sites with photos. I think Winksite would be great for poets – especially those who write Haiku.
Earthcam adds a twist to the usual photo blog. With a paid subscription, $4.95 US a month at the time I wrote this, you can access Web cams around the world on your phone. You can also set up your own Web cam on your desktop computer, and view it on your phone. This could be useful for people who want to see their children during the day, or check on a pet. "Nanny or Fido Phones" could be the next big thing.

How do you pick the right moblog? I tested out several sites. What I looked for was:

Don't make me think. Easy instructions and FAQs that don't have 'how do I find my blog on the Web site' as the last choice.
Privacy. Allow me to keep my pictures private, or a mix of public and private. I don't want to share pictures of my family with the world, but if I happen to see Elvis or a Yeti, I might want to post my proof.
Features. I liked the extra features of a forum and survey offered by Winksite, and the Web cam feature from EarthCam.
Personalization. I want my blog to look pretty. Offer me an easy way to change templates, even if I'm not a developer or a designer. Textamerica does a good job there.

You'll have your own laundry list of features that you want. Shop around, try the free version that most offer, and have fun. Many sites also offer features that allow you to cross-post – you can send pictures and text from your mobile blog to your regular blog and vice versa.
Once you've chosen your moblog, be sure and add the e-mail address you need to post your pictures to in your contacts, and add the URL of your site to your mobile favorites.

Add to contacts:

Press Start
Select Contacts > New
Type in the name of your mobile site
Scroll down to E-mail: and type in the e-mail address
Select Done

Add the site URL:

Select Internet Explorer
Select Menu > Add Favorite
Type in the site URL
Press Add

Here's an example of how easy it is to use a mobile blog. I signed up for a free blog with Textamerica. They gave me an e-mail address, and a URL for my site. It only took a few minutes, and no credit cards changed hands.
I took a picture of a cloud out the window of my office on my Windows Mobile Smartphone. Better than the coffee cup on my desk. This is how I posted it to my moblog using my Smartphone:

Press Start
Select Messaging
Select MMS
Select New
Select Menu > Recipients > Add
Scroll to the contact you added following steps above and select
Type in a subject, which will be your caption
Type in text, which will show up under your image when you open a larger version
Select Send

One word of warning – yes, this will count on your data charges. If you plan to post a lot of pictures, get an unlimited data plan.
Becoming a moblogger is fast, fun, and one more way to enjoy your Windows Mobile powered device
