Sony Ericsson, the 4th leading mobile phone manufacturer, announced in today's press release that the company was going to start work on low-cost cell phones for India's market. The phones would have features such music playback and full color screens, as Sony Ericsson begins productions in a joint venture with Flextronics and Foxconn.

The company is hoping manufacturing will be up to 10 million cheap phones by 2009 for the rapidly growing mobile market in India. It also claims that the phones will be competitively priced, along many flexible functions and customized features specific to the Indian market.

Sony Ericsson president Miles Flint stated that new low-cost phones would change the company as a competitor and allow them to develop new low-cost products. "Local manufacturing in India will result in improved cost efficiencies and enable us to offer attractive products at even more competitive price points," he added.

In terms of revenue, Sony Ericsson has claimed the number three spot, surpassing Samsung, with the latest line of high priced phones. SE's fourth quarter global market share reached 8.7 percent, just behind Nokia with 35.2 percent, Motorola with 21.9 percent, and Samsung with 10.7 percent.
